Ice Cream Made of Only Fruit

September 1, 2015 By Jenae 22 Comments

Ice Cream Made Entirely Out of Fruit- no dairy, no added sugar

Yum

Everyone in my family LOVES ice cream.  My husband used to have a bowl every single night (now he limits it to a couple times a week).  All three of our children LOVE it.  Honestly, I am not a huge ice cream fan, but like a little bit every now and then.

I was recently online looking for a way to make our own frozen yogurt (so it is slightly healthier) and found a machine called Yonanas.  This little machine claimed to use ONLY fruit to make a frozen dessert almost exactly like soft-serve ice cream.  I was immediately intrigued.  I poured over reviews, looked at competing machines, and finally decided to take the plunge and purchase it.  We have already used it several times and it has been a huge hit!  Since then, I found a post on Happy Hooligans where a regular blender was used with nearly-identical results!

This Ice Cream made of only fruit has revolutionized our dessert-eating experiences at our house.  No dairy…no added sugar…just fruit and that is it!  And it is even healthy enough that I would let my kids eat it for breakfast!  🙂

Here is what you’ll need:

Bananas

Strawberries (or any other type of fruit)

A Yonanas machine or a regular blender

Ice Cream Cones

Ice Cream Made Out of Fruit

1. Freeze your (peeled) bananas and strawberries overnight. The instructions say to use spotted bananas for the best texture.

2. Let the fruit thaw for about 10 minutes before getting started.  Then stick it in the top of the Yonanas machine and let ‘er rip!  Put one banana in and plunge down…then some strawberries.  Then the next banana and more strawberries…and so on.

The machine takes care of the rest!

3.  Use an ice cream scoop to put it on an ice cream cone for a more authentic ice cream experience.  🙂

I love my yonana. Try peanut butter, with the bananas, It’s great. As long as there are no peanut allergies.

Does it have to be bananas, or is there another fruit one could use instead? We have banana allergies in our house, but I would love to make something like this for my kids!

I think you could try it with other fruit too…it might not have quite as creamy of a texture. But you could always try adding a tablespoon of yogurt and try? 🙂

Avacado is a good alternative .. but green ice cream? I dunno… Unless you sneakily chuck some dark chocolate chips in and flovour with mint… Muhahaha

Thanks for this! Great idea. Can it be refrozen or would you need to eat it all there and then?

We haven’t tried re-freezing it. It never makes it that long. 🙂 But if you try it, let us know how it works!

We have tried freezing blended frozen fruits and it does work. It freezes pretty solid, so it works best for us to move it from the freezer to the fridge a little while before we want to scoop it out! It does tend to make the cones less melty!

Hmmmm…I can’t remember what specific ration we used. Probably 2 strawberries for every banana?
